Broken lift causing misery to disabled man

K Selvarajoo has rely on neigbours to carry him down five flights of stairs each time he has to go for his medical appointments.

PUCHONG: Wheelchair bound K Selvarajoo, 45, is a miserable man since the only lift at Block A of the Pangsapuri Aman low cost flats in Puchong broke down six months ago.

Selvarajoo, 45, has missed three of his medical appointments and his wife K Panchali has to rely on her neighbours to help carry him down five flights of stairs to go for his check ups.

The flats, built seven years ago to resettle the Indian squatters around Puchong, is now in a deplorable state after a new management oufit took over maintanence operations.

“I have to beg my neighbours to help carry him down to the ground floor,” said Panchali, adding her husband missed three check-ups because her neighbours were at work.

M Thangaveloo, 52, another resident claimed the Subang Jaya Town Council (MPSJ) appointed Cantuman Usaha (M) Sdn Bhd in January to manage the flats.

“There are two blocks in Pangsapuri Aman, Block A has nine floors and and Block B five floors,” he said.

Thangaveloo pointed that there are only two lifts for more than 250 residents of Block A and frequent usage had caused the lift to break down often.

He said the new management has refused to conduct monthly inspections despite the residents having to cough up RM55 in monthly maintenance fees.

“Beside the frequent lift breakdowns, there are also no proper lighting, the suroundings are unkempt and there’s no fencing around the flats to prevent robberies,” said Thangaveloo.

‘Pakatan Rakyat a disappointment’

Thangaveloo also said that the management seems to put money ahead of resident benefits.

“For a example, despite individual meters for each unit for water supply, the management locks the main pipe if there are errors in other residents bills.

“We hoped Pakatan Rakyat would sort out our matters, but they too disappointed us,” said another resident named Suresh.

Suresh alleged that a PKR man known as PKR Ravi from Puchong Intan promised the residents to help get the lift fixed.

“He wanted RM40 from each family and said the balance required to solve the problem would be topped up by Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo.

“Many of the residents paid up the RM40 and were issued receipts. That was two months ago and the PKR man has not come back to us.”

“We also sent a memorandum to Gobind Singh. But there has been no reply. Our local councillor Norhesni Ismail has never visit our flats in the last four years,” said Suresh.

State should take over

Meanwhile, MIC Youth chief T Mohan expressed shocked after visiting the low cost flat today.

“It is unbelievable the management and MPSJ has not looked into the lift problem for the past six months,” he told reporters.

“What is the point of the Pakatan state government keeping RM2 billion in reserve when people are suffering without basic amenities?” he asked.

He also suggested that MPSJ take over the management operations of the flats immediately.

“We will give the state government two weeks to resolve the problems faced the residents, otherwise would bring up the matter at highest level.

“In my opinion, all the apartments and low cost flats should be handled by town and district councils,” said Mohan.
