Cops summon Pakatan leaders over 'Janji Demokrasi'

Kuala Lumpur police have summoned two top Pakatan leaders in relation to the ‘Janji Demokrasi’ rally on Merdeka eve night.

NONEThe two are PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu and PKR vice-president Tian Chua (right).

“If they don’t appear on Sept 7, the police will apply for an arrest warrant (for them) from the court,” Kuala Lumpur deputy CID chief Aziz Zakaria was quoted saying in Sinchew Daily today.

Also wanted are the rally’s organisers Maria Chin Abdullah and Hishamuddin Rais, as well as the organiser of a separate rally held on the same day, Stanley Yong.

The ‘Janji Demokrasi rally held near Dataran Merdeka was meant to “remind” the government of unfulfilled promises to ensure a clean and fair election, whereas Yong’s ‘Merdeka March for Jalan Sultan’ was to pressure the government for the preservation of the historical area.
The Merdeka March was held just three hours before the 'Janji Demokrasi' rally, about a kilometre away from each other.
NONEWhen contacted, Mohamad Sabu (left), better known as Mat Sabu, had said that he was not at home when a letter telling him to give his statement to the police “immediately” was delivered.

He said he had promised the police that he would give his statement at Dang Wangi police station on Sept 9, instead because he would be away from Kuala Lumpur for the next two days.

Meanwhile, Yong told Malaysiakini that he was not contacted by the police at all and only found out that he was wanted to assist investigations when reading newspapers this morning.

“Since they have given a deadline until tomorrow, I’d better go to (police district headquarters) IPD Dang Wangi this afternoon to listen to what they wish to get out of myself,” he said.
