Government already taking steps to handle crime, says Idris Jala

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — Complainants in Selangor can check progress of investigations online without going to police stations, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala. He said complainants just need the report number to monitor the progress of investigations, including whether anyone was arrested or charged in connection with their complaint.
"Probably we are the only country doing this and we are also working closely with other enforcement agencies from New York and Hong Kong in improving our policing," said Idris when responding to concerns raised on crime rate by the Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee during a question-and-answer session at the International Malaysia Law Conference 2012 here today.
Idris, who is also Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) chief executive officer, said the counter rating system, which is a pilot project launched on Oct 25 last year at Selangor police stations, also provide room for feedback on the services, by just pressing buttons on a special machine at the stations or by sending SMSes.
"This puts the station and the officers concerned under a microscope to evaluate the services provided to the public," said Idris. He disclosed that out of 49,000 people who responded, 87.1 per cent had said that they were very satisfied with the services rendered to them.
He told the conference that a similar system had also been installed at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Selangor Immigration Department, National Registration Department and Perbadanan Putrajaya. — Bernama
