Karpal backs Lim as CM

Karpal says Lim had all the credentials and qualities to qualify as the head of the Penang Pakatan Rakyat government .
GEORGE TOWN: The DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has hailed party secretary general Lim Guan Eng as “the most popular and best choice” as Penang Chief Minister.
He said Lim had all the credentials and qualities to qualify as the head of the Pakatan Rakyat government in the island .
“He was the right choice. No doubt about it,”  Karpal told newsmen at his Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency here today.
He was responding to former DAP national vice chairman Tunku Aziz Ibrahim statement in a rally here last night that Lim should not be the chief minister since he was not a local but a parachute candidate from Malacca.
Tunku Aziz even suggested Chow, the state party chairman, should have been the chief minister if not for Lim not giving local grassroots leaders and members to make their own choice.
Karpal said it was not really necessary for only a local leader to become the chief minister, despite acknowledging that until Lim helmed the state government, only locals have been the state chief ministers.
Nonetheless, Karpal said Lim was a naturalised Penangite although he was born in Batu Pahat and plied his political trade in Malacca.
Karpal cited the so-called long running relationship between the Lim family and Penang vis-à-vis Guan Eng’s father Lim Kit Siang .
Kit Siang entered  Penang politics in 1986 general election to kick start DAP’s three-stage Tanjung project to capture the state government.
However, the DAP failed in its bid and the project, carried out between 1986 and 1995, did not succed .
Finally, in 1999 general election, Kit Siang packed his bags and left Penang politics after suffering embarrassing electoral defeats in Kebun Bunga assembly and Bukit Bendera parliamentary constituencies.
