UMNO out to "unnerve" the people over flag incident: But are M'sians so DUMB?
Kuala Lumpur. After two supporters at a rally were seen unfurling a flag with a red-white backdrop (resembling the flags of Singapore and Indonesia), the opposition Pakatan Rakyat is now scrambling to dismiss accusations that it wants to redesign Malaysia's flag.
Prime Minister Najib Razak held up the incident as proof the opposition is itching to change Malaysian institutions, including the flag, named Jalur Gemilang, or Stripes of Glory.
"They want to change everything... they even want to change our flag. There are many things they want to do but cannot because control of Putrajaya is in our hands," Najib said during the national day rally on Friday.
Last Thursday, the eve of Merdeka Day, two young people held up a red and white flag with a yellow crescent and a star on the top right corner at a rally organized by a coalition of 47 non-governmental organizations pressing for electoral reforms.
Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders condemned the incident, putting the opposition on the defensive ahead of an imminent election.
As it is, the BN has sought to paint the opposition as an alliance that would unstitch the existing structure of Malaysia, from the monarchy to the special rights of the Malays.
Minister for International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed warned on Saturday of a possible attempt by "certain quarters" to turn Malaysia into a republic.
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the government would investigate those responsible for the "provocative" unfurling of the flag as well as those who stepped on a picture of Datuk Seri Najib.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim accused Umno of trying to change the subject of debate from its corrupt and oppressive rule.
Nik Nazmi Ahmad, Parti Keadilan Rakyat's information director, said he could not confirm if the two young men were its members.
But he said the opposition had repeatedly reiterated its commitment to maintaining the flag and federal Constitution.
"Umno is just trying to unnerve people. We should be focused on more substantial things like the state of the economy and national integration," he said. "Jalur Gemilang is our national flag, full stop."
Nik Nazmi said the duo had written in a blog post that they did not represent any political party. In the blog, called Singa Selatan (Lion of the South), they said they were not suggesting that the flag be changed.
They had unfurled the flag, they said, to highlight the struggles of earlier Malay organizations which also opposed the British and fought for independence. This flag, called Sang Saka Malaya, was the flag of these early groups.
They said it was appropriate to fly it alongside the Jalur Gemilang to highlight the different stories of Malaysia's independence.
