Putrajaya police notified of Dec 12 sit-in

Thousands of stateless people are expected to participate.
PUTRAJAYA: Police have received official notification of the Dec 12 sit-in to highlight the issue of stateless people, according to its organiser, PKR vice-president N Surendran.
“We have officially notified the police today,” he told reporters after meeting with Putrajaya police chief Abdul Razak Abdul Majid.
He said all senior officers of the Putrajaya district police were at the meeting, which was held at their headquarters.
Surendran was accompanied by his lawyer Latheefa Koya, Batu MP Tian Chua of PKR, Klang MP Charles Santiago of DAP and Kuala Selangor MP Dzulkefly Ahmad of PAS.
He said Abdul Razak raised concern that the notice was short of the 10 days required under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
“Our stand is that the spirit of the Act is to facilitate the assembly,” he said.
“We asked them to ensure everything will be under control. It is their duty to do that under the Police Act.”
The protest will be held in front of the National Registration Department (NRD) and will begin at 10am. Several thousand stateless people are expected to participate.
“We’ll bring documentation and we’ll demand of the NRD to issue identification cards to them immediately,” he said.
“We expect the NRD to process the applications because we are aware of cases of foreigners getting ICs immediately.”
Three days ago, Surendran was summoned to the Travers police station for questioning over the protest, but he refused to give a statement.
Dzulkefly told FMT he would ask PAS to assign its Unit Amal to provide security at next week’s protest.
“I will raise the issue with PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu during the central committee meeting this weekend,” he said.
