Rais defends Hisham over police interference issue
KUALA LUMPUR - Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim today slammed parties that disputed and criticised the duties and responsibilities carried out by a minister.
He said for example, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussin was recently alleged to have interfered in the affairs of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), although he was just doing his job, as entrusted.
He said, those who criticised were actually not familiar with the legal matters and should realise their mortification.
"Based on the country's laws, I am of the view that the Home Minister is responsible under the Police Act, he is the top security leader in the country and he is also responsible for police.
"He is the chairman of the Royal Police Commission and as its chairman, he is responsible for the welfare, promotion and matters pertaining to development of the force,' he told reporters after launching the 1Malaysia Caring Community Gathering at Ampang Jaya police head office here today.
He said there was no question of interfering as the role and outcome of decisions made were under the official duties of the minister.
He was commenting on a news portal report which quoted former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan alleging that the police force under his leadership faced interference from Hishammuddin.
At the ceremony, Rais presented netbooks to 48 children of Ampang Jaya police personnel who obtained excellent results in the examination as well as wheelchair contributions to policeman Abdul Khalid Che Ros and Habsah Jawawee, wife of a police personnel who suffered from stroke.
He also presented a cheque of RM20,000 to the Ampang Jaya Police Club. Earlier, Rais visited Corporal Aziz Md Dom, 53, also suffering from stroke, at his house in Taman Cempaka and handed him a contribution.
