Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim urged Prime Minister Najib Razak to address concerns expressed by Philippine leaders that "certain corrupt Malaysian officials" might be harboring fugitive conman Manuel Amalilio, whose Ponzi scheme has caused some 15,000 Filipinos to become poorer by a staggering RM900 mil.
"I call on the Malaysian leaders to act swiftly in this matter as it concerns another country. Malaysia's name is now 'busuk' (smelly) in the Philippines. We are already facing rampant corruption in our own shores. We should not be seen to be condoning or to be protecting the corrupt from being punished in their own country," Anwar told a press conference on Friday.
Anwar also said that he knew "for a fact" that Manuel was a relative of Sabah chief minister Musa Aman, who has been accused of conspiring with Malaysian police and blocking Manuel's deportation to Manila.
"I know for a fact that he is related to the Sabah chief minister but that is not the point. We must not be complicit in this. We cannot allow Malaysia's image to be dragged into mud for personal motives," Anwar told Malaysia Chronicle at the sidelines of the conference.
