RAIN OF CASH awaits 146,000 Umno members ahead of party polls

RAIN OF CASH awaits 146,000 Umno members ahead of party polls
The upcoming UMNO party election will be the most expensive in its history, according to a reliable party source.
“This time, it will be bitter. More than half of the delegates want heads to roll after the poor performance at the May 5 general election. But more are expecting to make a fortune this time around,” the source told Harakahdaily.
Bernama reported that a total of 146,500 members will vote to choose top party leadership following a change in party’s constitution in October 2009, including the removal of the nomination’s quota system that prevented many aspiring candidates in the past from challenging top guns.
But the UMNO source said these ‘lucky’ members could expect 'windfall'.
“Basically they are expecting to be offered much more than the RM500 incentives under BR1M (Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia) before casting their votes. Aspiring candidates who wish to climb the ladder may have to dig deep into their pockets," it added.
“(Deputy UMNO president) Muhyiddin (Yassin) is walking on a tight rope. Between defending his seat and going against his boss Najib Razak (UMNO president), he has to choose one that will prolong his political career,” the source went on.
There has been speculation that Muhyiddin may have to face financial juggernauts such as the former Melaka chief minister Ali Rustam and Felda chairman Isa Samad.
“With Dr Mahathir Mohamad throwing his support for Najib, Muhyiddin is now the most vulnerable person in UMNO with so much to lose,” it added.
Mahathir had recently said that no one in UMNO was qualified to replace Najib.
