Hudud rift widens as DAP acting chief warns PAS

The rift in Pakatan Rakyat over hudud continues to widen, with DAP acting chairperson Tan Kok Wai issuing a stern warning to its ally PAS.

He said if PAS continued to be adamant about pushing for the implementation of the Islamic law, then it has no place in the opposition bloc.

In a statement issued by the party headquarters today, Tan told PAS that it could "dream on" about establishing an Islamic state and DAP would never agree to hudud being implemented.

"When we formed Pakatan, we never agreed to an Islamic state or hudud," he told Malaysiakini when contacted later.

Tan also quoted a Chinese proverb that "people who walk different paths cannot make plans together".

"PAS must consider the interests of our nation and rakyat," he added.

Asked if this was DAP's official stand, the Cheras MP offered a cryptic response, saying: "It is like in DAP... If you do not agree with the dream of 'Malaysian Malaysia', there will be no room for you in the party."

Why is MCA silent about Umno?

In his statement, Tan also hit out at MCA for slandering DAP on supporting the implementation of hudud.

He said MCA should not point its finger at DAP and PKR only, as the BN component party should also block Umno from supporting hudud.

He questioned why MCA, in particular its president Liow Tiong Lai, never dared to challenge Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and other Umno ministers who do not reject hudud.

"MCA didn't even oppose or reject the Islamic state when PAS joined BN in the 1970s.

"But now they are saying they want to go to the streets to protest and MCA Youth wants to 'surround parliament'.

"This is odd, very odd," he added.

This is the second warning issued by DAP to PAS since the hudud issue re-emerged recently.

Last Friday, DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke also called on PAS to quit Pakatan if did not back down on its theocratic goals.
