Anwar downplays Khalid-Najib meeting

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has brushed aside Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, saying that the Selangor menteri besar has clarified the matter with him.

"We met him (Abdul Khalid) last night and he explained and joked about it (the reaction to the meeting)," Anwar told journalists after a buka puasa event at his residence in Segambut tonight.

He said his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is PKR president, was also present at the meeting.

Anwar was responding to speculation on possible Umno overtures to Khalid who is under pressure from PKR to step down as menteri besar.

Abdul Khalid was with Najib for a buka puasa event at Masjid Tengku Ampuan Jemaah, Bukit Jelutong, near Shah Alam on Thursday.

Anwar dismissed talks of a private meeting between Abdul Khalid and Najib following the buka puasa event.

"It was a normal invitation (to Najib and Khalid) by the mosque committee. It is good that he (Khalid) attended - it is in Selangor and he was invited by the mosque committee," he said.

Yesterday, Najib too dismissed there was a private meeting with Abdul Khalid, stating that the event was a public affair.

Buka puasa with 100 orphans

Earlier, Anwar held a buka puasa with some 100 orphans from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Anwar said the initiative was a family effort where everyone had chipped in and he later also handed out early 'duit raya' to the children.

"Even when I was in government I realised there was a tendency to highlight contributions or assistance (to the needy) which actually came from public funds.

"That is okay, but you must raise your own (money too). There are so many multi-millionaires in the government," he said.
