Astro bombarded over 'Israel link' claim

The Facebook page of satellite television network Astro was today bombarded with angry comments over its purported business links with an Israeli company.

The barrage of comments appear to have been prompted by remarks made by Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who is also Umno supreme council member.

Asyraf in a Facebook posting threatened a boycott against Astro if it did not explain its links with Amdocs, which he claimed was an Israeli company.

"Amdocs is a company owned by Israel and was awarded the 'subscriber management system' contract by Astro.

"Malaysians should boycott Astro as a protest against the killings of Palestinians," he said in the posting.

Asyraf also attached online reports by Haaretz, Israel's oldest newspaper, which reported about the deal.

Asyraf also attached online reports by Haaretz, Israel's oldest newspaper, which reported about the deal.

His remarks were subsequently picked by the Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) web portal.

Do you want bad publicity?

Several postings by Astro to promote its programmes were spammed with comments demanding to know if the allegation was true.

"Astro uses the service of Israeli company Amdocs. Let's pressure it to change company for its billing services or else it is our responsibility to boycott Astro," said one user by the name of Amiinulhikmi Jamros.

Another user, Mohd Shahrul Nizam said: “Please explain your link with Amdocs. This act during the suffering of the Palestinian is an affront to Malaysians! Do you really want this bad publicity Astro?"

Yet another user, Mohd Zuhairi Mzm said: "If Astro remains silent without an official statement soon on the AMdocs issue, I will not hesitate to stop being a customer of Astro and funders of zionism."

Malaysiakini has contacted Astro's communications department and is awaiting their response.

The business dealings of local companies with entities linked to Israel have received increased scrutiny amid calls for boycott against Israeli businesses for its military offensive in Gaza which has cost over 700 lives to date.

McD not spared

US-based McDonald's too has become a target due to the US' strong backing and funding of Tel Aviv's military.

This prompted the Malaysian chain of McDonald's to issue a statement today in its defence.

"McDonald's the source of livelihood for more than 12,000 staff where more than 85 percent are Muslims.

"Sixty-seven of our restaurants are owned and managed by 27 local franchisees, 40 to 50 percent of which are Malay Muslims.

"On top of that, McDonald's also provides business opportunities to more than 50 local suppliers who provide job opportunities for more than 2,500 locals," it said, adding a boycott of the fast food chain would hurt the Malaysian economy.

It added royalty payment to use the McDonald's trademark was a corporate norm and no funds were channelled for political or conflict purposes.

The statement was published in leading Malay-language dailies today and also on McDonald's Facebook page.
