Bung hails Hitler as Germany advances

Perhaps it was the World Cup fever, or perhaps the early hours of the match, but the advance of the German football team to the finals of the 2014 World Cup saw Malaysian parliamentarian Bung Moktar Radin saluting Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

"Well done...Bravo...Long live Hitler,” the Kinabatangan MP tweeted, all in capital letters, via his Twitter handle @mykinabatangan at 5.30am this morning, following Germany’s shocking 7-1 defeat of host nation Brazil.

His bizarre tweet drew immediate reaction in Twitterjaya, with many expressing anger and puzzlement at Bung’s choice of words.

One netizen, only known as Akmal (@an______) asked if Bung was “high” while sending out his post.

“Sniffing glu so early in the morning,” was Akmal’s reply to the MP.

To this, an irate Bung replied with an yet another insult: “Maybe you are like (Penang deputy chief minister II) P Ramasamy, just drank todi.”

More short text message brickbats followed, with Bung even engaging many of his detractors.

Bung made clear that he was not joking, retorting a tweet by @mohdhafidh who asked if he thought it was funny to cite Hitler.

Bung replied: “Maybe you have a mental problem.”

Another Twitter user using the handle @ shaike49 who called Bung “low class crazy MP” was asked to scram: “You’re free to get lost and enjoy with the loser.”

However, the Sabah MP has a fan. One user with the name @hagemerul liked his tweet. “Stylo, Datuk,” he wrote in response to Bung’s Hitler salute.

Staunch supporter of Germany

In responding to the many heated replies Bung told the The Star Online that he was attacked because of who he is and not because of the tweet.

Bung (right) said he is staunch supporter of Germany and did not find anything wrong in referring to Hitler.

"I don't know what's wrong with people sometimes. Hitler is part of history and the German team fought like how he did," he told the daily, adding he tweeted that for fun.

"I think people nowadays should transform their mentality. Whatever I tweet people hit me. They are not hitting me because of Hitler but because I am Bung Moktar," he asserted.

Bung has been the Saban MP since 1999 but also often courted controversy with his loose tongue in Parliament.

Even in the august House, he has come under fire for making sexist, racist and some insensitive remarks.
