The Kuala Lumpur City Hall is in the midst of a plan to purchase four shop lots in the city to be turned into homeless shelters.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said he expected the shelters in Lorong Haji Taib to be completed by year end.
"We may buy four 4-storey shop lots in Lorong Haji Taib, which shall be renovated (to become shelters)," Bernama reported him as saying after handing out cash donations and basic goods to 500 individuals, including the poor, orphans, single mothers, the disabled and senior citizens.
‎Tengku Adnan said the ban was part of efforts to clean the city of beggars and the homeless, as well as the soup kitchens that feed them.
But in an apparent bid at damage control, he later announced he would meet with soup kitchen operators this Tuesday to discuss the issue.
He told reporters the meeting would clear up the misunderstanding surrounding his ban, as well as discuss a better location for the soup kitchens to continue their volunteer work.
"I welcome their help in giving food to the homeless, in fact even up to now I donate rice to the soup kitchen in Jalan Imbi," said Tengku Adnan.
"So we shall discuss with them and City Hall on how to resolve this amicably, because we also want to protect the homeless."‎
