KJ flays DAP for 'twisting' race riot remark

Insisting that Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s remark on May 13 has been manipulated, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has urged the DAP to first reflect on their role in national unity.

In a lengthy statement, Khairy said that DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang's accusation that the reminder was a "threat" was and "irresponsible" move pandering to "sensationalism".

"Is it wrong for a national leader to remind the people to safeguard unity?

"What is Lim's (left) motive in twisting what the DPM had meant to turn it into a threat?

"To me, this is normal of Lim, who always assumes the worse and sensationalizes issues with ill-intentions.

"Maybe Lim should reflect and consider what he and his party had contributed to the national unity, which is becoming more and more fragile today," the youth and sports minister said.

Khairy said that as a Malaysian who loves his country, Muhyiddin had said what he did as "he wants to see Malaysians live in harmony".

Tensions on the rise

He said that it is "undeniable" that the tensions are rising due to the flogging of issues which "divide on the basis of race, religion, language, economy and history".

He said that unity is not something that can be taken for granted and is something which need to be worked at constantly by all.

"World history has taught us that the use that divisive issues without control can cause unrest," he said.

Khairy (right) said that May 13, 1969 is a historical fact and the government has in the past four decades put in place policies to avoid its recurrence.

"But Malaysians need t realise that national unity is not something that can be built in a short time just with good intention, without considering reality and history.

"Strengthening unity is not the role of the government but is the responsibility of all, including the opposition, so let's fulfill this obligaion."

Muhyiddin had said that the recurrence May 13 race riots is "not impossible".

This was seen by DAP as a veiled threat.
