Police are now investigating whether an Estonian model romantically linked to a member of the Johor royalty could have been murdered.
Regina Soosalu was initially thought to have drowned.
According to a report inThe Star today, her body was discovered on a beach in Pulau Rawa.
Soosalu had arrived at a resort there just hours earlier from Kuala Lumpur, where the freelance model is based.
The police decided to look into the murder angle and classify investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code after discovering "suspicious" wounds on her body.
Six suspects have also been detained to facilitate investigations but the police have yet to call up her boyfriend.
"All six were on the island on the day of the incident but I cannot reveal any more information as we are in the midst of our investigations," Johor CID chief Hasnan Hassan is quoted as saying.
The report also quoted a source close to Soosalu and her boyfriend as saying that he had been told the model was last seen by hotel workers leaving her room for a walk near the jetty. She never returned.
Brother says 'let it be'
In another report, The Star also quoted a close friend of the deceased model as saying that Soosalu spent a lot of time on Pulau Rawa after getting together with her boyfriend.
"I did not notice anything unusual about the way she acted leading to her death," said Josiah Mizukami.
He also revealed that Soosalu was not close to her family in Estonia and seldom spoke of them.
"After her death, close friends received calls from her brother asking about what had occurred but a few days later, he stopped calling and just said we should all just let it be," he was quoted as saying.
Mizukami also disclosed that Soosalu often went to Pulau Rawa for short holidays with her boyfriend.
Meanwhile, another close friend, who was not named, said Soosalu and her boyfriend were not on good terms over the last few months.
"Previously, we often met up but things have changed. They fought a lot in front of everyone," he said.
