'Not wrong for Muslims to sell food earlier'

There is nothing wrong for Muslims to sell food earlier in the day during Ramadan, said former Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

“It is not wrong in terms of hukum (law) to sell food, especially to non-Muslims as they are not fasting,” Asri (right) told Malaysiakiniyesterday.

The focus should instead be on Muslims who eat in public, said the prominent scholar.

Adding further, he said it was important to note that there are special cases such as women who are menstruating, the sick, children and travellers.

“Maybe a man wants to buy food for his wife who is menstruating or for his children who are not fasting. Then there are travellers, who can buy and eat food in their room. As long as they don’t eat in public, as that might invite suspicion,” Asri said.

His views came in light of a directive announced by Kedah exco member Badrol Hisham Hashim who said that Muslim-owned food outlets in the state which operate before 3pm will have their business licenses revoked.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom (left) said that all religious departments in the country would ensure that the directive is followed.

Commenting further, Asri said the country has “many weird laws”.

“I don’t know why they are being overly strict. They have to explain the rationale behind (the directive). It is not as if we are more religious if we enforce it,” he said.

Asri added that if the directive cannot be backed up by religious texts and lacked rationality, it will destroy people’s trust towards the religious institution.

On fast food franchises which are not subjected to the same directive, Asri said this has further dumbfounded the people.

“They will wonder why fast food outlets like McDonald’s and KFC can sell food but the makcik who owns an eatery cannot,” he said.
