SCARY HOLIDAY: Gunshots jolt resort guests in Sabah's Pulau Mabul

KOTA KINABALU - Several gunshots were heard at Pulau Mabul off Semporna, here just before midnight.

‎Dive instructor Maadil Nanding said the shots were firedround t 11.3pm

"We heard the shooting probably somewhere near the Mabul Water Bungalow Resort.

"It could be warning shots from the police not to allow someone or local boats to get close to that resort," he told New Straits Times when contacted.

Maadil, who works with Borneo Divers Mabul Resort‎, however said they needed to wait until morning to get a clear information.

As of now, situation remained calm on the island.

"At least I think most of the guests (of Borneo Divers) were already in their rooms when the shootings occurred.

"No one panicked," he said, stressing the situation was under control.

Pulau Mabul is a well-known destination among divers. Borneo Divers Mabul Resort is located about 500m from Mabul Water Bungalow Resort.

Security forces have been placed at the island following several kidnap incidents.

The authorities could not be contacted for clarification. -NST
