State Malaysia Islamic or secular, Isma dares Abim

Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) yesterday challenged the Muslim Youth Movement (Abim) to state its stand on whether Malaysia is an Islamic or secular country.

Isma Sg Petani leader Muhammad Luttfi Abdul Khalid said Abim president Amidi Abdul Manan (left) has many members in the organisation who specialise in legislation and who could advise him on the status of the country.

“Asking other Islamic NGOs to stop the polemics over this matter, although a safe strategy, is not a mature one. People will be confused on Abim’s true stand on this," said Luttfi in a statement.

“Why is the call made only now? Why wasn’t it when Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng held that Christians can use the word ‘Allah’ in the Malay Bible?”

Amidi had last week urged quarters that had played up the issue on the country's status to cease as contention on the matter will lead to tension in the country.

Luttfi then questioned whether making a stand was a tough decision for Abim, which he said had Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim as its backbone.

“Do they have to get the consent of certain political figures first? Muslims are wondering whose interests Abim are defending.

“Although Abim is known for its non-partisan stance, its attitude on the country’s status has eroded its credibility.

“In order to be fair, Amidi should criticise unacceptable statements made against Islam,” said Luttfi.

“It would be laudable if Abim can defend the status of Malaysia as an Islamic country,” he asserted.
