Teacher with 'anti-govt' posts transferred

A teacher who was recently issued a warning for posting a poster of DAP's Teluk Intan by-election candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, among others, on her Facebook page has been transferred.

The teacher, who requested anonymity, said that the letter informing her of the move was hand-delivered at her school in Malacca today.

"It is a mandatory transfer. I cannot appeal the decision," she said in a text message toMalaysiakini.

The teacher, who has served for 16 years, said that the new school is 27 kilometres away from where she lives while her current school is only two kilometres away.

"I am transferred from a school that is nearby to one that is far. Don't they care that I am a widow? This is seriously stupid," the single parent said.

The Malacca Education Department's letter was issued to her after she was summoned to the Education Ministry in Putrajaya earlier this month on the same matter.

Malaysiakini had earlier reported that a special officer to the Education Ministry director-general had told the teacher that her Facebook posts will be "monitored from time-to-time".

The officer confirmed he had done so on the instructions of director-general Khair Mohamad Yusof (right), but he did not respond to Malaysiakini's requests for comments.

Besides the post on Dyana Sofya, other posts which were deemed "anti-government" included a 1980s news clipping quoting first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman calling for Umno's abolition.

The National Union of the Teaching Profession, however, objectedto the intervention, saying that Facebook is a “personal right” and off-duty teachers have the right to express their opinion.
