Will royal spanner be thrown into MB works?

All eyes are now on Sultan Sharafuddin Abdul Aziz following PKR’s announcement that party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has been endorsed to replace Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor menteri besar.

In revealing the party's decision at a press conference held after midnight following the PKR supreme council meeting, Anwar Ibrahim stressed on the importance of a smooth transition of power.

However, Khalid's close rapport with the sultan could prove to be a stumbling block to what is known as the "Kajang Move", the blueprint drafted to oust the incumbent MB.

A source from the MB's office revealed today that the sultan might make a statement on this matter soon, perhaps at a breaking of fast event this evening.

Anwar's announcement this morning gave the impression that Wan Azizah had received the blessings of the palace to succeed Khalid. But this is not the case.

The sultan has the final word on who can become the MB while the party in power can only make suggestions on the candidate.

Khalid might resist

Meanwhile, it appears that Khalid himself is determined to defend his post, which he has held since Selangor fell into the hands of Pakatan Rakyat in 2008.

Last week, the corporate bigwig-turned-politician told reporters that he intended to remain in office until the next general election, which is due in 2018.

His political secretary Azman Abidin also hinted that Khalid might resist.

Speaking to The Star, Azman said Khalid was adopting a "wait and see" attitude with regard to the Pakatan leadership meeting tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Anwar also claimed that the Islamic party agreed to change the MB but there have been no discussions as to who the replacement would be.

However, Selangor PAS denied this.

The party's state commissioner Iskandar Abdul Samad refuted reports claiming that PAS agreed to Khalid's removal following a series of "official and unofficial" meetings among Pakatan leaders.

"This is not true because we have not been informed by the PAS central leadership that they have agreed to drop Khalid.

"The central leadership always communicates with us on the MB issue to get our views or to update us on the developments," Iskandar is quoted as saying in one report.
