Zakat is just about collecting...



I agree with them. What happened to the zakat money estimated at billions of ringgit? Where did it go, how was it spent and who got or didn't get it?

It has been many years since the issue of zakat was brought up at the Dewan Rakyat. In the late 80s, (if I'm not mistaken) the late Tun Ghafar Baba said the collection should go back to the poor and NOT for the purpose of investing in stocks market, property, etc.

However, our zakat institutions has 'deviated' from its original objectives. The proceed is not only to build mosques, madrasah or Islamic schools but alleviating poverty among Muslims and those in need of assistance.

With prudent and proper management, the zakat money could have easily eased the government's burden in reducing the number of hardcore poor in our society.

I don't want to touch the zakat issue from the Islamic perspective but everybody knows how it should be fully-utilised.
