'Crony interests cause for Sri Aman Hospital delay'

The interest of a Sarawak government crony that has taken precedence over the interests of the people is the cause for the delay of the RM200 million Sri Aman Hospital that was approved in 2009, says the Sri Aman DAP division.

The 50-acre site was swampy, but because it belonged to a member of Sarawak United People’s Party, the site was selected over another, much better site owned by “an outsider”, Sri Aman DAP  division chief Leon Jimat Donald said today.

“The crony sold his land to the government for RM5 million,” Leon (left) claimed. “In this instance, the interest of the crony has certainly taken precedence over the interest of the people.”

He said that to date, the government has spent RM9 million on earth filling at the site, and this on only 14 acres of the 50-acre swamp.

Describing the hospital project as “very sick”, Leon said the BN government had been using it to hoodwink the people of Simanggang every time there was an election.

Covered with shrubs and creeping plants

Before the 2011 state election, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak made a special visit to the hospital site and promised the people of Simanggang that it would be completed by October 2013.

It was used to woo the voters to vote for SUPP-BN candidate Francis Harden in the 2011 state election, and this was done again in the 2013 parliamentary election.

“Until now, the whole area is still covered with scrubs. The gate has collapsed, and even the signboard is covered with creeping plants. It looks like the project has been abandoned,” Leon said.

The delay, he said, was one of the causes for the many deaths in the locality because seriously sick people had to be rushed to Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, which is more than 200km away.

The old hospital, built in 1959 to serve the people of Sri Aman, nolw has to cater to patients from Lubok Antu, Betong, Saratok, Pantu and other nearby areas as well.

It is not only overcrowded, but also lacks facilities and specialist services.

The population of Sri Aman has grown to more than 200,000, Leon said. “It is indeed an extremely painful wait for the people of Sri Aman. How much longer do the people have to wait for the new hospital?”

Urging the government to expedite the construction of the project, the Sri Aman DAP leader added: “Don’t wait until the next state election to make another announcement or to start working.

“The voters of Sri Aman by now know the tricks of the government. You cannot continue to lie to them. Enough is enough.”
