Felda settlers told to sign 'akujanji' as apology

More than 500 Federal Land Development Agency (Felda) Palong 8 settlers in Negeri Sembilan have been asked to sign the ‘Akujanji’ letter as an apology for their legal suit filed against the agency.

The letter was issued by the Felda Palong 8 work plans committee (JKKR) last Friday.

A Felda Palong 8 settler who declined to be named toldMalaysiakini that he was asked to return the letter this Friday.

He said the letter was believed to have been issued after the settlers filed a suit against Felda at the Seremban High Court in 2009. The case has since been referred to the Court of Appeal.

It is also believed that failure to sign the letter will lead to the settlers being denied their special rights as Felda settlers.

However, the 58-year-old settler said it was up to the settlers to sign the letter or otherwise.

“As for myself, I may sign the letter, but I am still undecided whether I will return the letter or not.

“I will see how things go. If it is necessary, then I may sign the letter,” he said.

The settler also confirmed that the settlers of Felda Palong 8, located in Gemas, Negri Sembilan who filed the legal suit against Felda were denied their right to receive Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd’s (FGV) dividends and Hari Raya cash aid.

When contacted, a Felda spokesperson told Malaysiakini that the agency did not give out such instructions for the Akujanji letters to be distributed to the settlers.

“We did not issue such instructions (for the letter to be signed). The instruction was given by Felda Palong 8 JKKR and not us,” he said.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Anak Peneroka Felda Kebangsaan (ANAK) president Mazlan Aliman (left) said that several settlers had confided in him, telling him they were under pressure (to sign the letter).

“I believe they were threatened. The letter itself is a threat,” he said.

He then advised settlers to think thoroughly before signing the letter.

“Don’t be easily duped. I understand that many are worried and afraid, but please think thoroughly before signing the letter,” he said.

Felda last month announced that settlers who take legal action against it will not receive Hari Raya cash aid and dividends from FGV’s trust fund for settlers, amounting to about RM1,000 each.

A Felda spokesperson said the decision was to “safeguard the interests of other settlers who contributed to Felda’s development”.

Settlers from various Felda land schemes, mostly in Pahang, had filed suits against the agency over allegations of possible cheating over the price of palm oil sold to the land authority.
