Health minister wrong to blame us for dengue rate, says Selangor exco

Putrajaya has no right to criticise the Selangor government over the dengue outbreak in the state, said state exco Datuk Teng Chang Khim (pic).
Teng, who is also DAP Sungai Pinang assemblyman, ticked off Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam for criticising the state for having the highest number of dengue cases in Malaysia.
"Subramaniam's accusation that Selangor was not doing enough to stem the dengue outbreak does not make sense at all," Teng said.
"Furthermore, local town councils have also been directed to step up their enforcement by checking premises and residences for breeding grounds."
Teng told The Malaysian Insider that over the past eight months, the state government had held meetings with municipal councils to discuss measures recommended by the health department.
"Awareness campaigns have also been carried out to educate residents and schools about the dangers of dengue.
"High risk areas are regularly monitored by the local municipal councils and joint cleaning projects are also carried out," Teng told The Malaysian Insider.
"As the health minister, Subramaniam should be more knowledgeable about the dengue issue as it is not a local matter.
"There are dengue outbreaks all over the world and it is not just Malaysia which is faced with this problem." Teng said.
Last week, Subramaniam had criticised the Selangor state government for its apparent inaction in stemming the dengue outbreak in Malaysia's wealthiest state.
A total of 28,621 cases had been reported in Selangor until July 19 with 38 fatalities.
Subramaniam said this was a three-fold increase in the number of cases when compared with the corresponding period last year.
"What is the Selangor government doing about this? This is not about politics but about the rakyat," Subramaniam had said.
Teng said Selangor had the highest number of cases and fatalities because it was one of the most densely-populated states in the country.
"This is not an issue about the lack of prevention or inaction by the state
government.
"Selangor has almost six million people living in the state with one of the fastest growing developments in Malaysia.
"These are factors which Subramaniam should take into consideration before he starts pointing fingers," he added.
Teng also criticised Putrajaya, saying the Federal government had never provided allocations to Selangor to combat the outbreak.
"In the end, the state government has to allocate its own funds to local councils for the various exercises to combat the dengue outbreak."
Teng said Selangor had already done everything possible to prevent the outbreak from becoming more serious, something acknowledged by the Selangor Health Department.
"I would like to ask Subramaniam what else has not been done in Selangor to prevent the outbreak."
Teng added that public indifference toward the dangers of dengue was not helping matters too.
