Hindraf: Non-Malay students being victimised

Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM) is unhappy that many non-Malay students have been deprived of rightful places in their choice of education in public universities despite their perfect results.

In a statement today, PHM chief P Waytha Moorthy lashed out at the authorities for continuously victimising non-Malay students who excel in their studies.

Moorthy said out of 40,000 seats have been offered by 20 public universities, over 73 percent are for the Malays while the Chinese and Indians occupy another 19 percent and 4 percent respectively.

He also highlighted that Mara and its affiliates offer more than 30,000 seats annually solely for bumiputeras through various programmes.

“Since its inception, Mara has churned out over 700,000 graduates, with more than 500,000 students receiving Mara’s education sponsorships, more than 200,000 students obtained business loans from Mara from 1951 to 2012, and 150,000 Mara students received entrepreneurship training,” Moorthy said.

Despite having to “reluctantly” acknowledge the exclusivity of Mara for Malay community, Moorthy said the Hindu NGO is “disgusted” that children from non-Malay communities who come from poor and low income families, are not able to avail themselves in private education. Their only option is public universities which government funded.

“If even this alternative is marked with discrimination and marginalisation, where does it leave these aspiring youths, the crème de la crème of the nation?” Moorthy said.

Moorthy added that fundamental rights like education, as enshrined in Article 12(1) of the federal constitution, should not be subject to racial discrimination.
