Khalid refuses to budge until no confidence vote

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim today remained steadfast on clinging to his post despite PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail's claim of a majority in the Selangor state assembly for her to become the next MB.

In a statement posted on his Facebook and Twitter, Abdul Khalid said that the support shown by 30 assemblypersons from the 56-member assembly must be "translated" into a vote of no confidence.

Until then, Khalid said, the Selangor state government would be "functioning" as usual.

"This claim must be translated to a vote of no confidence in the state assembly," he said.

"Until that process that takes, the running of the state government will be as usual," he added.

That would mean waiting for the next state assembly sitting in November before revisiting the MB's post.

Earlier today Wan Azizah announced that she has secured a majority in the Selangor state assembly to become the next menteri besar after two PAS state assemblypersons expressed their backing for her.

Wan Azizah now has 30 state assemblypersons backing her in the 56-member assembly.

PKR: By law Khalid should resign

Meanwhile PKR vice president N Surendran begged to differ with Khalid's position, saying by the state constitution he is obliged to resign if he loses support.

He said Khalid's response to Wan Azizah's claim has therefore no legal basis, but is an attempt to "desperately cling" to this post.

"With (Wan Azizah's) announcement, Khalid Ibrahim has no legal or moral legitimacy to continue as MB of Selangor.

"Article 53(6)  of the Selangor state constitution states that if the MB ‘ceases to command the confidence of the majority’ of the members of the assembly, he shall tender his resignation and that of state exco.

"With the confirmation today of 30 members who no longer have confidence in Khalid, Article 53(6) becomes operative. Khalid is bound by the constitution to leave office immediately," said Surendran in a statement today.

He also called on Khalid to explain how he arrives at the majority support that the latter had claimed to the sultan.

'On August 11 Khalid had informed the ruler that he had the confidence of the majority of the assembly.

"He must now also explain upon what basis he made such a statement to the ruler of the state of Selangor," said Surendran.
