MCMC, police probing Facebook user for insulting King

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is working with the police to probe a Facebook user who allegedly insulted the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Sultan Badlishah.

"MCMC is cooperating with the police to investigate the case of insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong by the owner of the Facebook account 'Chandra Lawan Tetap Lawan' to ensure the culprits face stern action," the commission's chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said in a statement last night.
"MCMC is requesting that all quarters not make any speculation on this issue as it could compromise the investigation and disturb the supremacy‎ of the royal institution."‎
Sharil reminded the public not to spread unverified information on the social media,‎ saying that this may cause tension among the races in the country.
However, the administrators of "Chandra Lawan Tetap Lawan" claimed yesterday that the picture was uploaded on a fake, duplicate page that has since been removed by Facebook following reports by its supporters.
Yesterday, the Kedah government called for stern action against the owner of the Facebook account, Bernama reported.
State secretary Datuk Mohd Puat Mohd Ali said the Kedah government regretted the action of the individual responsible for the photograph.
"Police must investigate the matter immediately so that stern action can be taken against those involved and the matter should not be taken lightly," he was quoted as saying last night.
Mohd Puat said the MCMC should play a role in tracking down the culprit.
"The owner of the Facebook account claimed that his account had been hacked and this is a simple way of saving oneself.
"The MCMC must use the expertise available to investigate the mastermind responsible for the act," he was quoted as saying.
He added that insulting the institution of the monarchy and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had become a trend among irresponsible Malaysians, who would later apologise if they received criticism from others.
He said a police report had been lodged by the Kedah State Civil Service Officers' Association so that investigation papers could be opened immediately.
Bernama also quoted the president of the Council of Kedah Royal Family, Syed Idrus Syed Baharom, as saying that the Council was insulted by the act and considered it an extreme case.
The Council, Kedah Umno Youth as well as several other non-governmental organisations in the state had lodged a police report over the matter.
