MRT Corp CEO resigns over accident

MRT Corp chief executive officer Azhar Abdul Hamid announced his resignation today following the incident last night that claimed three lives at an MRT construction site.

Azhar made the announcement at a press conference in Sungai Buloh today.

“As the head of MRT Corp, I am taking personal responsibility for the incident and this is the correct thing to do,” he said.

He added that he has informed MRT Corp chairperson Ali Hamsa of his decision.

Azhar was appointed MRT CEO on Sep 1, 2011. He was former managing director for Sime Darby Bhd.

Three Bangladeshi workers died after 650 tonnes of concrete blocks fell on them at the construction site for the Kwasa Damansara MRT station, near Kota Damansara.

MRT Corp said that a pan of the MRT guideway dislodged from its piers and fell on the workers at about 8.30pm.

It happened during the construction of the parapet for the guideway.

All work at that package of the project has been suspended pending investigations.

The subcontractor for the package is Syarikat Muhibbah Perniagaan dan Pembinaan Sdn Bhd.

Last June, MRT Corp suspended another subcontractor after a metal slab fell onto a passing car at the Pusat Damansara station construction site.

The car sustained extensive damage, but the driver escaped unhurt.
