Pakatan ready to face voters if Selangor MB crisis unresolved, says Anwar

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said Pakatan Rakyat is prepared to face voters to get a fresh mandate if the Selangor menteri besar crisis could not be resolved.
While reiterating that the three-party coalition will not break up over the issue, the opposition leader said it could be resolved through a smooth transition, a vote of no-confidence or a snap election.
"There are no objective reasons for such an election, given that Barisan Nasional has only 12 seats in the 56 member assembly House, and the GE13 was held just 15 months ago," Anwar said in a statement today, referring to last year's national polls.
He said the people must be left with no doubts that if "tough decisions" were to be made, they would be done in their best interests.
However, Anwar did not say what the "tough decisions" were.
"Whether or not we lose support for the stand we take, we will be forever committed to the goal of a just, corruption-free and truly democratic Malaysia."
He said the pact would not deviate from its core values.
These were integrity, transparency and accountability in government and any violation by Pakatan's three component parties would cause the pact to break up, he said.
These principles formed the bedrock of Pakatan since its inception, he said, and the last two general elections had proved that Pakatan's struggles, which were anchored on those principles, resonated with the electorate.
"The coalition must, therefore, consolidate this strength to remain together and resist all attempts to break it apart. Each member party of the coalition must, therefore, respect collective decisions made after consultation.
"Failure to respect and honour this principle of adherence may warrant some difficult decisions to be made," he said in an apparent reference to embattled Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim who had insisted on remaining as MB despite the pact's decision to remove him.
Anwar said the Pakatan leadership had an understanding that PKR had the final say on the MB appointment in the state, just as it respected the rights of its partners to make similar decision in other states.
"That understanding must be adhered to.”
It was reported today that PAS leaders have recommended Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad as the compromise candidate to break the deadlock over the MB post but in a swift respond, PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail urged the Islamist party to respect its right to determine the replacement MB.
Anwar also expressed concerns over the divisive and racist tone by some minor Pakatan leaders, which he said, violated Pakatan's core values and called on disciplinary action be taken against them.
Khalid, a former corporate captain, became MB six years ago when PKR and its allies scored a shock win over Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 2008 general election.
Early this year, PKR initiated the "Kajang move" to replace Khalid with Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail after complaints against the two-term MB for running the state unilaterally without consulting party leaders as well as the Pakatan leadership.
These include his handling of issues, such as water rationing, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department's seizure of Malay and Iban Bibles as well as Khalid's push for the Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex), which had upset some Pakatan leaders as it went against the pact's election manifesto to abolish tolled highways.
Khalid has resisted all attempts to remove him, and said he would remain as MB until his term ends.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang is backing Khalid and its spiritual leader, Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat and its Ulama wing, have also expressed support for Hadi.
Talk of an imminent split in Pakatan surfaced when the screenshot of a leaked Whatsapp conversation went viral last week, showing PAS member Dr Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki's statement on teaming up with rival Umno to form a simple majority government and at the same time, retain Khalid as MB.
Saifuddin yesterday said notes on the plan to oust Khalid, which also included the MB's dubious deals which had affected his integrity, will be distributed to top Pakatan leaders today.
Khalid had challenged his party to lodge a report with the authorities on the claims and also threatened to take legal action against any "defamatory statements" made against him.
