PSM: Stop turning flats into nests of poverty

Local authorities were urged today to take over the management of low-cost flats valued below RM150,000, to ensure they did not turn into “poverty nests”.

This was among the demands made by the Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and a group of activists today who demonstrated in Putrajaya against the high cost of houses, particularly in Kuala Lumpur.

The 30 who gathered in front of the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry at 10.30am today, shouted slogans such as “the rich have a lot of houses while the poor have none”.

The demands were sent through a memorandum and received by a representative on behalf of Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan (right).

The memorandum, endorsed by 32 NGOs, including Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), also urged for grants to be given to houses which lacked such documents.

“The government is urged to establish a non-profit body tasked to build comfortable, affordable houses,” the memorandum also urged.

Meanwhile, PSM also raised the issue of failed projects such as the Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) which was claimed as to not have achieved its goal (of building affordable homes) yet.

“The price of houses that was said to be affordable, to me, is not that affordable,” Sungai Siput MP Michael D Jeyakumar told reporters.
