Pugsom: We last paid Johns Hopkins in May

Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (Pugsom) denies claims that failed to make payments to partner university Johns Hopkins Medical University, resulting in their partnership beingterminated.

Pugsom added that the graduate programme would continue to exist with collaborations with another universities, which it has yet to announce.

“The last payment made to Johns Hopkins was US$2 million (RM6.3 million) on May 7,” said vice-chancellor Sothi Rachagan (right) in a statement.

He said that Pugsom owner Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd to date paid a total of US$ 34.199 million (RM107.91 million) to Johns Hopkins.

He said that US$5 million (RM15.77 million) of this went to the Swami Institute of International Medical Education and another US$29.199 million (RM92.14 million) as part of the affiliation and collaboration agreement.

“AMC and Johns Hopkins are in dispute over whether any further sums are payable and the failure of Johns Hopkins to address the many grievances of Academic Medical Centre Sdn Bhd (AMC) and Perdana University...

“Pugsom will continue to exist and grow even further in collaboration with another leading top-tier US University, the identity of which will be announced  jointly in due course in accordance with the disclosure terms in the agreement with the new partner that was signed on Aug 11.”

Seamless operation

He also said that the dispute between Pugsom and Johns Hopkins over payments would be resolved "in accordance with the Affliation and Collaboration Agreement with Johns Hopkins".

Sothi added that Pugsom’s credibility is intact despite the termination of the Johns Hopkins partnership.

“Pugsom continues to operate seamlessly with both foreign and local faculty with no disruption whatsoever from the departure of the three Johns Hopkins seconded staff,” he said.

He added that Pugsom still maintains its partnerships with The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Beijing Genome Institute, Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network and Zurich University of Applied Science.

The partnership between Pugsom, established in 2010, and Johns Hopkins was launched by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak with much fanfare in September that year.

Najib had then said that the collaboration would turn Malaysia into a regional medical research hub.

Pugsom is part of Perdana University, which chancellor is former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
