Spotlight on PAS meet today to determine MB fate

The fate of Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim could finally be decided today after two weeks of heightened crisis in the state as PAS' 37-member central committee meets to decide on their support.

It is largely PAS' support that has kept Khalid's government running even though he was expelled from PKR just over a week ago.

All four PAS excos in the state have remained in their positions in accordance with their president Abdul Hadi Awang's public support for Khalid.

It is however largely expected that PAS will finally withdraw its support for the embattled MB today, more so because he is no longer a PKR member.

A withdrawal of support could mean the resignation of the four remaining excos, thus collapsing Khalid's independently run government.

The committee will also decide whether to endorse PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the new MB for the state, but PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali has previously stated that the party does not want Wan Azizah, though not on gender grounds.

According to sources, one possible outcome is the central committee reaffirming PAS' commitment to Pakatan Rakyat and agreeing that Khalid be replaced, but to let the Selangor sultan decide on the new MB from a list of names that would include PKR's choice Wan Azizah.

The highly watched meeting starts at 10am today at the PAS headquarters at Jalan Raja Laut.
