'Taman Negara ranger assisted at nudist camp'

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said a Taman Negara ranger was aware of the nudist activity at the forest reserve in Teluk Bahang, which caught national attention when a video clip of the event went viral on the Internet.

Lim said he was shocked to see a comment from a participant in the Internet that a ranger, yet to be identified by the authorities, helped the group set up a campfire before they went to sleep.

"This is very unusual. I haven't seen the video but it is learnt there was a ranger in the background. That ranger was on duty that day," Lim told a press conference at Komtar.

"It seems the group had told the ranger about their nude activities and went on to do it.

"After their programme, they got his help to set up a campfire. He even helped pour some gasoline to help start the fire, " he said.

Lim urged the Taman Negara  authorities to act on the matter as the national park is under jurisdiction of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

He was referring to the controversial and illegal activity, captured in a video clip titled "Penang Nudist Sports Games 2014", which took place in Teluk Kampi, where the national park is located.

Police report lodged yesterday

Individuals believed to be aged between 30 and 45 were seen engaging in nude body painting, Gangnam Style Horse Dance and around a campfire in the five-minute video clip.

Lim noted that a police report on the incident was lodged at the Balik Pulau station yesterday by the Teluk Bahang Pakatan Rakyat coordinator Halik Sabri Hamid.

State police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the force had identified 15 individuals, among them seven Malaysians, who took part in the nudist sport, and will soon make the necessary arrests.

"We don't know how this (ranger helping out in the nudist activity) can happen under the federal government jurisdiction," Lim said, adding that neither the state nor its local council had power over the area.

Lim reiterated that the state government would not approve such activities in Penang, but was surprised that it was given so much coverage in the media, with some splashing the news on their front pages.

Lim said the nudist activity in Penang was not the first in Malaysia, and he then distributed copies of news reports on other incidents in the country, including the latest in a Perak jungle on June 24.

That incident involved an episode of "Naked and Afraid" in the show "Pain Forest", in which the participants who were filmed naked.

This came after reports in May revealed the shooting of a nude scene in the Danish version of reality show "Survivor", titled "Robinson Ekspeditionen", on an island off Mersing, Johor.

Earlier, in July 2010, news reports revealed that there were couples caught in sexual trysts in Terengganu, with many of those involved said to be students from institutes of higher learning.

"Such activity seems to get a lot of coverage when it happens here and not in the other states, where there is less interest and coverage," Lim quipped.

Lim spoke to the media after a meeting with state executive councillors, at which where a report on the issue by a Taman Negara officer, Saat Yaakob, was shared with the media.

In his report, Saat said the national park had received a complaint about the matter from Umno Telub Bahang assemblyperson Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah.

He said the activity was carried out under the guise of preserving and protecting the environment and that the video clip of the nudist sport was uploaded on YouTube about two months ago by Chew Tok Hua, believed to be a Taiwanese.

"We have lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Multimedia and Communications Commission to act on the video - to stop its distribution, links or sharing in the social media," Saat said in the report.

"This is because the distribution of the video is immoral and touches on the sensitivities of the local people and the harmony among Malaysians.

"Those who organised the activity are believed to be those who practise deviant and immoral culture," he added.
