Deputy IGP RETIRES: Village boy who will always be a cop
KUALA LUMPUR - He described himself as a “small village boy” from Sabah who was given the opportunity to make a difference by serving the people.
Fighting back tears, Tan Sri Bakri Zinin remained thankful for being part of the force as he donned his uniform for the final time.
Having served for the past 39 years, the deputy inspector-general of police retired yesterday.
“The force has changed the luck of a village boy. I cannot be more thankful to have been given the opportunity to change my life and that of my family,” a teary-eyed Bakri said.
“I am both proud and lucky to have served the force and the public.”
Bakri, 60, joined the force on November 6, 1975 and enjoyed an illustrious career. He began as a probationary inspector at 21 and was made head of administration at the Tuaran police station in 1976.
It was no turning back as he went on to hold various posts, among others as Kudat district deputy police chief, Sabah head of administration ethics and conduct, Kudat police chief, Sandakan police chief, Kota Kinabalu police chief, Seremban acting chief, Lahad Datu district chief, Cheras district chief, Dang Wangi district chief, Bukit Aman deputy director.
He was attached to Bukit Aman as its narcotics director in 2008 before he was named deputy IGP in May last year.
“I will continue assisting the force in any way possible and ensure it stays relevant with the changing needs of society.
“Once a policeman, always a policeman,” he said.
So what’s your retirement plan, Bakri? Politics?
“If the public trust me and wants me to, I would gladly do so.” -Malay Mail
