At least five former Internal Security Act detainees are currently fighting alongside militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) in Syria, The Star reports today.
Authorities identified the five as Zainuri Kamaruddin, Rafi Udin, Zid Saharani Mohamad Esa, former Jemaah Islamiyah operative Samad Shukri and former Kedah PAS Youth information chief Mohd Lotfi Ariffin.
Rafi, 48, and Zainuri, 47, had been injured following clashes with forces of Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad last month.
After being detained for about five years, Rafi was released in October 2006 after the Home Ministry was satisfied that he had been rehabilitated.
The Star reported that the five had been deeply influenced by extremist teachings and often kept to themselves.
"Those who are fighting in Syria believed that almost any means justified the ends," it said, quoting a source.
"Thus, they are willing to do almost anything to justify their false jihad."
The report comes as the number of Malaysians killed in Syria rose to three, following the death of 21-year-old Kedahan, Mohammad Fadhlan Mohammad Khir, on Tuesday.
The Star reported that Fadhlan had been killed while attempting to flee a raid by Syrian government forces.
Other Malaysians who had perished in Syria included Zainan Harith, 52, also known as Abu Turob, and 26-year-old factory worker Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki.
On Monday, The Malaysian Insider reported that a family of four, including parents and their teenage children aged 18 and 14, were fighting alongside rebels in Syria.
The father and son are engaged in battle while the mother is a cook for the Isis fighters. The role of the 18-year-old daughter has not been ascertained.
"The daughter used to teach English at a school set up last year for children of Muslim extremists in Malaysia.
"The school was located in one of Malaysia's northern states," the source revealed to The Malaysian Insider.
It was earlier reported that Malaysian women had travelled to the Middle East to offer themselves as "comfort women" in what is called "conjugal jihad", a controversial concept.
The concept originated from a Wahhabi edict around 2013 that called for Sunni women supporters to come forward and boost fighters's morale in battling the Assad regime in Syria.
Putrajaya had said it was working with intelligence agencies and Interpol to monitor Malaysians travelling via transit to Iraq and Syria.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told the New Straits Times that police were investigating the claims of Malaysian women involved in the Middle East.
"Putrajaya does not condone or endorse the actions of Isis and nor is Malaysia a hub for terrorism and militant activities," Zahid was quoted as saying.
Between January and June this year, police arrested several people said to be involved in terrorism, including a Rela member and a navy police officer. A home-made rifle and 433 live bullets were also seized from the Rela man.
Authorities believe he aided the militant group which underwent combat training at Gunung Ara Para, Kampung Nyior Ketior, Perak, in December last year.
