SO HOW SAFE IS SABAH NOW? Seceding from Malaysia won't ensure state's security - Shafie Apdal
SHAH ALAM - Seceding Sabah from Malaysia does not ensure the state will be stable from the security aspect, said Regional and Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He said this was because the country was frequently faced with all kinds of problems to safeguard Sabah from outside threats that wanted to claim the state.
"To break free is not an easy task, they are also claiming the southern Philippines and said Sabah is part of that country. Abu Sayyaf kidnap our people, we are also facing various problems.
"Imagine if the secession of Sabah from Malaysia occurs, is there a guarantee that Sabah will be stable and its security assured," he told a media conference after officiating the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Student Destiny Week (MDS) September 2014 session here today.
He was asked to comment on the provocation by certain quarters to secede Sabah out of Malaysia which was spread in the social websites recently.
Mohd Shafie, who is also Semporna Member of Parliament, said after the country achieved independence the people, including in Sabah, enjoyed many benefits compared to those in many other countries, which had long achieved independence.
On the opposition claims that the issue arose because development in Sabah's interior had lagged behind other states, Mohd Shafie said it was not an excuse for the people to secede Sabah from the country.

He said the people should instead expressed their dissatisfaction through the election process if they found that the government was not doing its best to bring about development. - BERNAMA
