FAULTY DESIGN, strong wind caused Johor pedestrian bridge to come crashing down

FAULTY DESIGN, strong wind caused Johor pedestrian bridge to come crashing down
JOHOR BARU - Strong wind and a faulty design has been attributed to the roof of a pedestrian bridge at the Perling-Pasir Gudang Highway near Taman Kobena to be blown off during a downpour on Sunday.
The incident, which happened at 4.30pm, had also led to two men and three women being injured besides causing damage to two cars, a lorry and a motorcycle.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) construction research centre director Prof Dr Mahmood Md Tahir also attributed the fall of the roof to a billboard, he told a press conference.
The 40m-long roof covers a concrete pedestrian bridge that connects Taman Kobena and Taman Melati.
The heavy downpour and strong winds on Sunday also tore down several high rise floodlight scaffolding installed for the KL International Tattoo 2014 at Stadium Merdeka.
A tree that was uprooted during the storm smashed into a police beat base, killing two cops who were inside it.
Meanwhile, local authorities in Selangor are taking steps to be prepared in case of similar disasters in the state.
Selayang Municipal Councillor Yew Jia Haur said the council is on high alert for emergencies and disasters due to the rainy season.
"We have a special task force on standby to assist the public during disasters," he added.
A Klang Municipal Council spokeswoman said that while maintenance work is carried on a regular basis on public infrastructure, they also need to replace some of the worn out metal pieces such as bolts and nuts as and when necessary or at least once in five years.
She said this has to be done taking public safety into consideration. -Sundaily
