SUCH BLATANT ABUSE! Jakim praises Najib for Budget 2015 in Friday sermon
KUALA LUMPUR - Amid criticisms of more pork barrel spending by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government next year, Malaysia’s foremost Islamic authority praised today Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his administration for putting together a Budget 2015 that it says will bring prosperity to the people.
In its Friday sermon for Muslims nationwide which is also posted on its official website, the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development (Jakim) also praised the government’s allocation for a RM30 million Quran printing centre in Putrajaya, which reportedly will be the second largest in the world after Saudi Arabia.
“The pulpit would like to take the opportunity to say congratulations to the government especially the prime minister for tabling the budget themed ‘The People’s Economy’ totalling RM273.9 billion,” said the sermon in Malay.
“Hopefully the budget will ensure the prosperity of the public, and be given guidance and blessings from Allah.”
Jakim also issued a warning to avoid leakages and embezzlement of funds at every level, reminding Muslims to be more frugal as making the country prosperous is a trust given by God.
“The pulpit is confident that responsible leaders will always choose the middle path, which is through moderation by balancing between the short and long-term needs for the sake of continuous prosperity of the public,” it said.
The Najib administration has repeatedly stressed the need to trim subsidies to strengthen its fiscal performance but its Budget 2015 announced last week sparked outrage from opposition lawmakers for the high allocations for infrastructure projects.
The move is likely to temper public backlash over its other unpopular moves, analysts told Malay Mail Online.
The observers said the prime minister, in hoping to stem public anger after the latest round of fuel subsidy cuts and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) next April, had failed to introduce wide-ranging, institutionalised reforms to key administrative sectors in the government.
Najib had announced that the 1Malaysia People’s Aid handouts (BR1M) for households with monthly incomes of RM3,000 and below will rise by RM300 to RM950, while households with incomes between RM3,000 and RM4,000 will enjoy handouts of RM750 from RM450 previously. -Malay Mail
