The idea behind the sedition dragnet

It is to create fear among the population, not to punish those caught, says an activist.
adam safwanSEREMBAN: The government is using the Sedition Act to scare the Malaysian public from criticising it, and not so much to punish those caught in the current dragnet, a forum was told last night.
Adam Adli, a student activist who was recently charged with sedition, said the act was a convenient tool for silencing critics because the basic idea behind it was to “prevent people from talking”.
This was why the British colonial administrators introduced it in 1948, he added.
“There was a communist movement at the time and there was no elected government. The British used the Sedition Act to create fear among the people,” he said at the “Abolish Sedition Act Movement” forum organised by the Negri Sembilan Chinese Assembly Hall and Ikram Negeri Sembilan.
“We received independence in 1957 and have conducted a general election every five years. The Sedition Act is not relevant any more.
“People like me and Safwan Anang (another student activist) were charged not to punish us, but to create fear among the people, to prevent them from talking,” he added.
Suaram executive director Yap Swee Seng told the forum said that his organisation was conducting a nationwide roadshow to create awareness on the Sedition Act and to collect signatures for a petition to Parliament.
He said the petition would urge the government to abolish the Sedition Act and drop all the current charges.
