CHANGE OR BE CHANGED - pro-Dr M newsman tells 'weak' Najib ahead of key Umno meet
As the clock ticks down for the Umno general assembly, a veteran newsman with close links to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as well as a staunch critic of the current administration, has issued a warning to the party president.
If Najib Abdul Razak fails to heed the frustrated voices of Umno members and the Malay community, A Kadir Jasin said, he runs the risk of being changed or witnessing his party being decimated in the next general election.
In his latest blog posting today, Kadir wondered if Najib still remembers that it was the Malays who saved him in the last general election.
If the Umno president and prime minister does remember and is grateful to them, he said, Najib should announce that he is retracting his suggestion to repeal the Sedition Act during the Umno meet, which would take place from Nov 25-29.
“Thank God, many Umno leaders have openly rejected this suggestion.
“The question also arises if Umno’s views were set aside when Najib repealed the Internal Security Act and Emergency Ordinance in 2011?” he asked.
The former New Straits Times Group editor-in-chief questioned if the two laws were abolished on the behest of the liberals who advise the prime minister.
“Is Umno no longer the main voice that Najib listens to save for the apple polishers (in the party?” he asked.
However, Kadir said if Najib still prioritises his party, then he should outline a “big plan” for Umno members and the Malays on how to improve their economic status and to narrow the divide between them and the non-Malays.
He also questioned if the prime minister is aware that some poor Malay fishermen’s families only have one main meal a day and the “special gift they promise their children who score good grades in their examinations is a meal at McDonald's”.
Kadir also took a swipe at Najib, saying the prime minister has outdone his predecessors in terms of conjuring slogans, promises, pledges and policies but lags behind in turning them into reality.
“Najib is known for his ‘I hear you’ slogan. But is this also an empty statement? If he truly hears the frustrations, he needs to change,” he added.
Najib does not admit his mistake
The veteran newsman also noted that despite BN’s dismal performance in the last general election, Najib did not admit that his strategy failed.
Prior to Najib, he pointed out, all Umno presidents and prime ministers chalked up major victories in their inaugural general elections, thus having the mandate as the nation’s topmost leader.
“Najib was angry and refused to accept the fact that his strategy failed and that his election advisers should be sacked.
“On the contrary, he blamed the Chinese voters and highlighted that Umno won more parliamentary seats compared to the 2008 election,” he said.
Kadir also asked if the prime minister was aware of the real reason behind his failure in the last general election and how to improve BN’s performance in the next election.
“What we know is that Najib’s performance was worse than (former prime minister) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and there are no concrete signs that Umno and BN have grown stronger.
“In fact, Najib himself recently lamented that he was ashamed of Selangor Umno’s inability (in wresting back) the state,” he added.
As for the coming Umno meeting, Kadir said it should not be like the previous one, where there were only “praises, worshiping, apple polishing and jokes”.
If this is the case, he said, there is a great possibility that Umno would be vanquished in the next general election.
“The Umno president and the entire party leadership must prove that people come first and performance is given priority,” he added. -M'kini
