Fancy number plates okay for now

The RTD has been further directed to stop making media statements on the matter.
JPJPETALING JAYA: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has been directed to postpone its crackdown on fancy number plates, begun Nov 1, until further notice.
The RTD has been further directed to stop making media statements on the matter.
These directives are contained in a letter issued by Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai to the RTD.
“However, enforcement of regulations on High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights and strobe lights is to be continued,” said the letter on an issue which has drawn a lot of flak from the public.
The RTD explained in a statement that the crackdown on fancy number plates was aimed at identifying fake number plates “used by certain quarters for criminal purposes”.
“The enforcement of regulations on registration number plates is to instill respect for the law,” it added. “This is among the initiatives to reduce deaths caused by road accidents.”
The crackdown also facilities police and Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) action against vehicle owners, said the RTD statement.
