Judge orders caning right in his court

Two offenders were lashed by a prison officer as people in the public gallery watched.
rotan300KUALA LUMPUR: A Sessions Court judge today gave a literal interpretation of the old dictum that justice must be seen to be done. He ordered the caning of two convicted robbers right inside his court.
The two young men, both dressed in prison clothes, were directed to bend in front of Judge Ahmad Bache’s desk and the caning was administered by an officer of Kajang Prison.
The caning was witnessed by several prison officers and a doctor as well as members of the public in the gallery.
Mohamed Shaznee Jahn Mohamed Yasin, a 19-year-old student at a skills training centre, received seven lashes and entertainment centre caretaker Redzohaan Abdullah, 20, got eight. A light cane was used.
Shaznee was also sentenced to one and a half years’ jail. He had pleaded guilty to robbing a man of RM418 while armed with a piece of wood at Kedai Internet V-Hyper Enterprise in Setapak on Nov 24, 2013.
Redzohaan also pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to two years’ jail for robbing a man of his mobile phone, a tablet computer and RM300 while armed with a machete. The crime was committed last Jan 21 at KK Mart on Jalan Ipoh.
After the caning, Judge Ahmad advised both offenders not to repeat the offence.
“Crime does not pay,” he said. “I hope both of you are remorseful.”
