Minister corrects deputy’s ‘no toll hike’ statement

Fadillah Yusof says it is best to allow toll rates to increase.
toll smart tagKUALA LUMPUR: Works Minister Fadillah Yusof today corrected a misconception over a speech yesterday by his deputy, Rosnah Abdul Rashid, saying the RM558.89 million toll allocation does not necessarily mean rates will remain the same because various factors have to be considered.
Fadillah said Rosnah’s statement during the debate on the 2015 Supply Bill was not accurately reported by the media.
“Nowhere in Rosnah’s answer yesterday did she mention that there will be no toll hikes in 2015.
“We have asked for an allocation of RM558.69 million for toll concessionaires, which is a standard procedure, so that the funds would be there if needed for the purpose,” he said.
Fadillah maintained that the decision to increase toll rates or pay compensation to concessionaires lies with the government.
He added that the government had set up a special committee to handle the cost of living led by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to consider every angle before proposing to the cabinet whether to increase toll rates next year or not.
“The committee will take into account the government’s financial capability and the rakyat’s current cost of living data before arriving at a decision,” he said.
“If cabinet says there will be no need for compensation, then the money can be used for other purposes like upgrading existing infrastructure.
“It is better to allow the concessionaires to collect toll because if we give compensation, other projects will be sacrificed.
“As far as we are concerned, it is best to allow toll rates to increase so that the government can focus on other projects.”
