KUALA LUMPUR - A new body or commission will be set up to tackle the issue of foreign labour, both legal and illegal, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pix).
He said it was being set up under the instruction of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
"However, the body would not be involved with any ministry, including the Home Ministry or the Human Resource Ministry," he said in a press conference held at the Bukit Aman Police Headquarters, here today.
Ahmad Zahid said a cabinet paper on the matter was being prepared and would be tabled at the Special Cabinet Meeting on Foreign Workers, to be chaired by the Prime Minister himself.
Commenting on a local media report that there were 4.6 million illegal foreign workers in the country, Ahmad Zahid said he would be meeting with Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem to find out how he obtained the statistics.
Yesterday, Richard Riot revealed that of the 6.7 million foreign workers in the country, 4.6 million had entered the country illegally.
However, Ahmad Zahid said the majority of the foreign labour who entered the country were legal, with work or visit permits, but had failed to renew their visas, making them illegal visitors or workers.
"The reason they become illegal workers is because their employers are irresponsible and do not care for them," he said.
Asked if the number of foreign workers would increase in the next 10 years, Ahmad Zahid said it depends on demand and supply.
"When there is demand, there will be supply. So the employers and people in this country must change their attitude. The people here do not want to work in 3D sectors which are difficult, dirty and dangerous," he said.
Earlier, Ahmad Zahid said the ministry would organise a Film Censorship Board (LPF) Carnival on Nov 22 and 23 at the Alamanda Shopping Complex, Putrajaya, in conjunction with the board's 60th anniversary.
The objective of the carnival is to foster greater cooperation between the LPF and the film and broadcasting industry in the country. – Bernama
