Kamalanathan says the ministry will investigate the allegations that a Christian student from Sabah was forced to wear a tudung and join a nasyid group. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, November 20, 2014.
The Education Ministry will probe the case of a Christian student from Sabah who was allegedly forced to wear a "tudung" (headscarf) by a primary school in Negri Sembilan and to join a nasyid group.
Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan said the ministry does not coerce any non-Muslims to follow Islamic education.
"Based on what you raised earlier, I will take note and will conduct an indepth investigation into the case. I will investigate and give a report," he told Gooi Hsiao-Leung (PKR-Alor Star).
He acknowledged that Kamalanathan, during the question-and-answer session, was committed to investigate the matter.
"The deputy minister said the mattar will be investigated, and we will continue to press for answers," said Gooi.
The Malaysian Insider reported recently that a 12-year-old Christian student at a primary school in Negri Sembilan was forced to join fellow Muslim students in their prayer at a camp she attended recently.
A source said that when the matter came to light, school authorities told the teachers and students to keep it under wraps.
But the school’s headmaster, Yunus Ismail, denied that the student was forced to don a tudung or forced to participate in the nasyid programmes.
He said the matter was resolved two weeks ago, and it was "not a big issue."
The girl’s mother, when approached, appeared unnerved by queries over the incident.
"I don't want to make it a big issue. I don't want my daughter to be shunned in school or get into trouble," she said.
Yesterday, a non-governmental organisation, the Sensible and Ethical Malaysians United Team (Semut), lodged a police report against The Malaysian Insider for carrying the story which they described as seditious.
Its secretary K. Prabakaran said the report was lodged following complaints from the public and to ensure that the article was authentic.
He said the body was concern over the credibility of the source quoted in the article which they said could create tension between Muslims and Christians in the country.
