Changing to new MyKad unnecessary

Public advised not to believe information that MyKad must be changed to new version by the year-end, the latest, to avoid paying a fine.
mykad-baruKUALA LUMPUR: The public is advised not to believe information being disseminated that they must change their MyKad to the new version by the year-end, the latest, to avoid paying a fine.
National Registration Department (NRD) director-general, Sulaiman Keling said there was no need for people to change their MyKad to the new version if it was still in good condition and functioning.
He also stressed that any information on MyKad could only be verified by the NRD director-general and designated officer.
“The NRD hopes for public cooperation by not believing any news related to the department or MyKad coming from the social media and other unofficial media to avoid any confusion,” he said in a statement today.
Sulaiman said changing the MyKad to the new version was not compulsory as the current one was still valid with no expiry date of its use set.
Sulaiman explained that applying for a MyKad fell under three categories. The first being for children, who are Malaysian citizens, upon reaching the age of 12, as required by law.
The second category involves Malaysian citizens who have reached the age of 18 but not yet 25, who must change their MyKad and this is once in a lifetime as stipulated under Regulation 27 of the National Registration Regulations 1990.
The third category involves cases where the identity card is lost, damaged or the chip is no longer functioning, or requiring change of details that is approved by the NRD. Sulaiman said the MyKad was introduced in year 2000 and the new version issued starting January 3, 2012.
