Country’s first Tweet team hits the streets

Tweet is Malaysia’s first ever all-women traffic patrol team to man roadblocks.
polis wanita_300PETALING JAYA: Malaysian traffic police have taken a new approach in law enforcement with the deployment of an all-women team at roadblocks.
Comprising six officers, the new Traffic Women Estimable Enforcement Team (Tweet) will be the country’s first all-women traffic patrol team.
As reported by The Star, Petaling Jaya Traffic Police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Roy Suhaimi Sarif said that the all-female team had the potential to improve situations at roadblock operations from a psychological aspect.
“We have had complaints that perhaps male officers were too aggressive or intimidate motorists, while some refuse to cooperate, even when officers just want to give them a warning, rather than a summons. They reacted defensively or tried to instigate officers.”
“This doesn’t lead to very professional enforcement,” said DSP Mohamad Roy in the report.
He also hoped the “softer” approach would make motorists respond better when faced with officers in uniform.
“The women officers can appear less aggressive and easier for motorists to work with,” he said.
That being said, Tweet officers still underwent enforcement courses first to prepare them for their new duties since most women officers in his unit were desk bound.
Saying their duty would prove to be an invaluable experience for them, the DSP added, ”Most female officers get stuck with administrative work and don’t get a chance to be out in the field.
“If this team is successful, we can request for more women to try out for enforcement work.”
He also explained that in the event motorists turned aggressive, a male officer would be stationed with the Tweet team during enforcement rounds.
The leader of the team of six, Insp Hariati Hamdan said the plan with Tweet seemed to be working so far.
“Some motorists were surprised that we were all women. However, they seemed more open to admit their offences and talk with us,” she said when met at a roadblock along Persiaran Tropicana on Wednesday.
