MORE RACIAL PARANOIA: Local movie ‘Lelaki Harapan Dunia’ may be banned for 'MAKING FUN OF THE MALAYS'
PETALING JAYA - The decision by the Film Censorship Board to “re-evaluate” Lelaki Harapan Dunia came as a rude shock to filmmakers as they fear a possible ban looming over claims the comedy is anti-Malay and anti-Islam.
Producer Sharon Gan said she received a phone call from the board’s official yesterday informing her of its decision.
“The board said because of the negative reviews published, the board has decided to re-evaluate the film,” she said.
Gan said she was not given details but was told to resubmit the evaluation form which would then see the board reviewing the movie to see if it is suitable for screening.
“I can only suspect the re-evaluation is caused by reviews claiming the movie makes fun of Malays and other sensitive issues. They must have also gathered comments made against the movie on social media,” she said.
“I’m sure if the reviews were positive, the film wouldn’t be re-evaluated. I trust the system.”
The film’s director Liew Seng Tat urged cinema-goers to quickly watch the film, fearing a looming ban.
Liew, had on his Facebook page said: “Hey friends, because of the issues raised by some people, our censorship board wants to re-evaluate ‪#‎lelakiharapandunia. Please go and quickly watch it if you haven’t done so because I do not know what will happen to the film. A ban would be an outrageous thing. I hope common sense will prevail.
“I need your support. I need your help to spread the word.”
The film, translated as “Men Who Save The World” was screened at several international film festivals before it premiered in cinemas nationwide on Nov 27.
The comedy is about Pak Awang gathering villagers to help him carry a house known as Rumah Amerika located in a jungle at the back of their village followed by a series of mishaps.
The filmmakers insist the movie, beyond its slapstick comedy, is about upholding community spirit and to appreciate the old tradition of angkat rumah (carrying of house). -Malay Mail
