MP asks why ad contract given to incinerator company

Ong Kian Ming wants to know why a company that under performed in two past incinerator projects was awarded an advertising campaign.
ong kian minKUALA LUMPUR: MP for Serdang Ong Kian Ming wants answers as to why a company that under performed in its construction and operation of two small scale incinerator projects in the country has been awarded a domestic advertising contract now.
In a statement, Ong asked, “…why is it that a company that was previously awarded two small scale incinerator projects and failed to deliver on time and within the specifications be awarded a big tourism promotion contract?”
Totally bewildered by this development, he also asked, “Are the skills and expertise for building incinerators similar to those needed for tourism promotion?”
Identifying the company as Sumur Mutiara Sdn Bhd, Ong declared that according to the company’s profile, its nature of business was General Contractor and a check on its website showed it was still under construction.
He claimed that even a Malaysian advertising industry trade magazine had never heard of the company and had to “Google” it.
He said, “This is a very strong indication that Sumur Mutiara is an unknown company in the advertising industry.”
Saying this same company put in a dismal performance when they built and operated incinerators in Cameron Highlands and Pulau Tioman, Ong added, I call upon the chairwoman of Tourism Malaysia, Ng Yen Yen, as well as the Minister for Tourism Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz to disclose the amount of the three-year contract awarded to Sumur Mutiara”.
Ong also wanted Ng and Nazri to explain why the contract was awarded to a company that was “virtually unknown in the advertising industry” and whose past dealings with the government have been less than satisfactory.
